I love that in Skyward Sword you see that Zelda and Link were close childhood friends. And that Zelda has a super strong personality which she probably used to give orders to Link that he readily obeyed. Residual instincts from the goddess and the hero?
Both costumes were made by the cosplayer, and they are fully embroidered. No paint was used at all.
